What is like to be in Reception Class?

Reception Class is a fun and exciting year where we inspire our youngest learners as they begin their journey at Divine Saviour.

We believe that children learn best through play. Play is serious work for our children – they challenge themselves, problem solve, work together, communicate, negotiate, develop an inquiring mind, express their ideas, imagine and most importantly laugh!

In Reception Class we love to jump in puddles, dig in the mud and explore the world using our garden kitchen area. Every day we immerse ourselves in different worlds and scenarios using the construction and open ended resources. We challenge ourselves by making obstacle courses and creating new games. We like to use our design and creative skills to create our own dressing up resources to enhance our story telling. Inside, we love to design and make things in our creative workshop, paint, draw or read quietly in our one of our cosy corners!

Every day we dance, sing and practice our counting. At first we learn a new sound each day and its mnemonic to help us learn to read and write. Later in the year we begin to write words and sentences. Alongside our child initiated ‘Busy Time’ sessions we have several short adult directed sessions where we learn new concepts and explore and widen our understanding of different curriculum areas.  Most importantly, we learn to live like Jesus through love, truth and understanding!
